The New World klipps om - utan Malick

Terrence Malick tvingas se sin originalversion av The New World, som just nu visas i New York och Los Angeles (och som hade premiär precis innan jul för att hinna bli aktuell för GG- och Oscarsnomineringar), dras tillbaka och klippas ner av New Line, från 150 till 130 minuter. Efter den 20:e januari, då filmen går upp i resten av USA, kommer enbart studioversionen att finnas kvar på repertoiren. New Line säger än så länge inget officiellt, men en icke namngiven anställd på DVD-kontoret säger såhär till min kollega:

"The edit for The New World was a studio decision. Malick ok'd the studio recommendation which came right before the holidays, but he had nothing to do with the actual edit. I also enjoyed the [original version]. I think it's a strong film, but the studio felt since it was being ignored by the critics groups that it needed to be shorter (I strongly disagree with that kind of thought process). We're going to release an extended edition of the film on DVD (with 35-40 additional minutes added to the [original version]). However, the [original version] will probably never be seen again after its initial run in NY and LA runs out on January 19th. The new theatrical version runs 20 minutes shorter than that version, I haven't seen a cut of it yet, but I've already made up my mind to be disappointed by it."

Det är i såna här lägen man hoppas det finns en ny Jerry Harvey i kulisserna, redo att raida en biograf, sno med sig originalet och visa det, on the qt, på universitetsområden och på skumma piratkabelkanaler, och därigenom ge det nytt liv, precis som Harvey gjorde med de långa versionerna av exempelvis Peckinpahs Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid och Ciminos Heaven's Gate. Å andra sidan lever vi i DVD-eran nu, och precis som citatet ovan gör gällande kommer vi förhoppningsvis att i slutändan få tillgång till både en och två versioner av The New World.
